Desulfococcus Widdel 1981, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Desulfococcus multivorans Widdel 1981.
Etymology: L. pref. de, from; L. n. sulfur, sulfur; N.L. pref. desulfo-, desulfuricating (prefix used to characterize a dissimilatory sulfate-reducing procaryote); N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. masc. n. kokkos, grain, seed), berry, coccus; N.L. masc. n. Desulfococcus, a berry shaped (spherical) sulfate-reducer.

Etymology: L. adv. num. bis, twice; L. part. adj. acutus, sharp, pointed; N.L. masc. part. adj. biacutus, twice pointed, referring to atypical cell shape.

Etymology: L. adj. multus, much, great, many; L. v. voro, to devour, eat; N.L. part. adj. multivorans, devouring numerous kinds of substrates.
