Etymology: L. pref. de, from; L. n. sulfur, sulfur; N.L. pref. Desulfo-, desulfuricating, use to characterize a dissimilatory sulfate-reducing prokaryote; L. adj. nauticus, nautical; N.L. masc. n. Desulfonauticus, a marine sulfate-reducer.

Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) TeSt = DSM 4206 = JCM 13028.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: FJ194951.
Etymology: Gr. pron. autos, self; N.L. adj. trophicus (from Gr. adj. trophikos), nursing, tending; N.L. masc. adj. autotrophicus, self feeding, referring to the ability of the organism to use CO2 as a sole carbon source.
