Type species: ¤ Desulfonema limicola Widdel 1981.
Etymology: L. pref. de, from; L. n. sulfur, sulfur; N.L. pref. desulfo-, desulfuricating (prefix used to characterize a dissimilatory sulfate-reducing procaryote); Gr. neut. n. nema, thread; N.L. neut. n. Desulfonema, thread-forming sulfate reducer.
