Etymology: L. pref. de-, from; L. n. sulfur, sulfur; N.L. pref. desulfo-, desulfuricating (prefix used to characterize a dissimilatory sulfate-reducing procaryote); L. masc. n. rhopalus, cudgel; N.L. masc. n. Desulforhopalus, cudgel-formed sulfate reducer.
