Type species: ¤ Desulfospira joergensenii Finster et al. 1997.
Etymology: L. pref. de-, from; L. n. sulfur, sulfur; N.L. pref. desulfo-, desulfuricating (prefix used to characterize a dissimilatory sulfate-reducing procaryote); L. fem. n. spira, a coil, spire; N.L. fem. n. Desulfospira, a sulfate-reducing coil.

Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) B331 = ATCC 700409= DSM 10085.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: X99637.
Etymology: N.L. gen. masc. n. joergensenii, of Joergensen; named after B.B. Jørgensen, a Danish microbiologist who has made important contributions to our current knowledge of the sulfur cycle.
