Type species: ¤ Desulfotalea psychrophila Knoblauch et al. 1999.
Etymology: L. pref. de-, from; L. n. sulfur, sulfur; N.L. pref. desulfo-, desulfuricating (prefix used to characterize a dissimilatory sulfate-reducing procaryote); L. fem. n. talea, a slender staff, a rod; N.L. fem. n. Desulfotalea, a sulfate-reducing rod.

Desulfotalea arctica Knoblauch et al. 1999, sp. nov.
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) LSv514 = DSM 12342.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AF099061.
Etymology: L. fem. adj. arctica, northern, from the Artic, referring to the site where the type strain was isolated.
