Type species: ¤ Desulfurolobus ambivalens Zillig et al. 1987.
Etymology: L. pref. de, from; L. n. sulfur, sulfur; L. masc. n. globus, a round body, a ball, sphere, globe; N.L. masc. n. Desulfuroglobus, a sphere that reduces sulfur compounds.

According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Desulfurolobus to ¤ Acidianus.
