Epsilobacteria Cavalier-Smith 2002, class. nov.
Type order: "Aquificales" Reysenbach 2001.
Etymology: Gr. epsilon, the letter e; Gr. n. baktêria, staff, cane; suff. -ia, ending to denote a class; N.L. neut. pl. n. Epsilobacteria, name proposed to formalize the customary designation of most members of the class as ε-proteobacteria.
Valid publication: CAVALIER-SMITH (T.): The neomuran origin of archaebacteria, the negibacterial root of the universal tree and bacterial megaclassification. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2002, 52, 7-76.

Note: The type order "Aquificales" Reysenbach 2001 does not appear on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names, and was not validly published when Cavalier-Smith proposed the class Epsilobacteria (January 14, 2002). The order ¤ Aquificales Reysenbach 2002 (previously known as "Aquificales" Reysenbach 2001) was validly published in the May 2002 issue of the IJSEM (Validation List no. 85). Consequently, Epsilobacteria Cavalier-Smith 2002 is illegitimate.
