Type species: ¤ Ferrithrix thermotolerans Johnson et al. 2009.
Etymology: L. n. ferrum, iron; Gr. fem. n. thrix, hair, thread; N.L. fem. n. Ferrithrix, iron thread, referring to filamentous nature and capacity for ferrous iron oxidation.

Etymology: Gr. n. thermê, heat; L. part. adj. tolerans, tolerating; N.L. part. adj. thermotolerans, heat-tolerating, able to tolerate high temperatures.
