Etymology: L. masc. n. fundus, the bottom, in this case the sea bed; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod or staff; N.L. masc. n. Fundibacter, rod of the sea bed.

Note: Fernández-Martínez et al. 2003 propose to transfer ¤ Fundibacter jadensis Bruns and Berthe-Corti 1999 (the type species of the genus Fundibacter) to the genus ¤ Alcanivorax as ¤ Alcanivorax jadensis (Bruns and Berthe-Corti 1999) Fernández-Martínez et al. 2003, comb. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Fundibacter to ¤ Alcanivorax.

Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AJ001150.
Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. jadensis, referring to the region Jade which forms part of the bay "Jadebusen", which belongs to the German North Sea coast.
