Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Gelria, Gelre or Gelderland, one of the 12 provinces in The Netherlands, in which Wageningen is located.

Gelria glutamica Plugge et al. 2002, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) TGO = ATCC BAA-262 = DSM 14054.

Etymology: N.L. n. acidum glutamicum, glutamic acid; L. fem. suff. -ica, suffix used with the sense of pertaining to; N.L. fem. adj. glutamica, referring to glutamic acid, on which the bacterium grows.
