Type species: ¤ Geothrix fermentans Coates et al. 1999.
Etymology: Gr. n. , earth; Gr. fem. n. thrix, hair; N.L. fem. n. Geothrix, hair-like cell from the earth, referring to the cell morphology under fumarate-reducing conditions.
