Etymology: Gr. n. hals halos, salt; N.L. n. arsenas -atis, arsenate; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod; N.L. masc. n. Halarsenatibacter, halophilic arsenate-utilizing rod.

Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) SLAS-1 = ATCC BAA-1651 = DSM 21684.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AY965613.
Etymology: N.L. gen. masc. n. silvermanii, of Silverman, to honor the American microbiologist Melvin P. Silverman of NASA [Ames Research Center] for his contributions to the field of geomicrobiology, especially with regard to the metabolism of inorganic iron and sulfur compounds by extremophilic bacteria.
