Halobacteroides Oren et al. 1984, gen. nov. (Type genus of the family ¤ Halobacteroidaceae Zhilina and Rainey 1995).
Type species: ¤ Halobacteroides halobius Oren et al. 1984.
Etymology: Gr. n. hals halos, salt; N.L. masc. n. bacter, a staff or rod; L. suff. -oides (from Gr. suff. eides, from Gr. n. eidos, that which is seen, form, shape, figure), ressembling, similar; N.L. masc. n. Halobacteroides, rod-like salt organism.

Halobacteroides acetoethylicus Rengpipat et al. 1989, sp. nov.
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) EIGI = ATCC 43120= DSM 3532.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: X89071.
Etymology: L. n. acetum, vinegar; N.L. adj. ethylicus, pertaining to ethyl alcohol; N.L. masc. adj. acetoethylicus, intended to mean producing acetic acid and ethanol.

Note: The specific epithet acetoethylicus (sic) has been corrected in the new combination Halanaerobium acetethylicum [see, ¤ Halanaerobium acetethylicum corrig. (Rengpipat et al. 1989) Rainey et al. 1995, comb. nov.]. However the name "Halobacteroides acetethylicus" corrig. has never been formally proposed before December 14, 2000 (date of publication of the amended Rule 61; see Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2000, 50, page 2239, column 2). Consequently, in the "List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature", the epithet acetoethylicus (sic) has been maintained for Halobacteroides acetoethylicus.
