Etymology: Gr. n. hals halos, salt; Gr. n. ekhinos, hedgehog; Gr. fem. n. thrix, hair; N.L. fem. n. Haloechinothrix, halophilic, hedgehog-like filament, referring to halophilic filamentous actinomycetes with spiny aerial mycelium.
