Classification (Warning: see also the file "Classification of prokaryotes: Introduction").
Halomethanococcus Yu and Kawamura 1988, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Halomethanococcus doii Yu and Kawamura 1988.
Etymology: Gr. n. hals halos, salt; N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; N.L. pref. methano-, pertaining to methane; N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. n. kokkos), a grain or berry; N.L. masc. n. Halomethanococcus, the salt-methane coccus.
Valid publication: Validation List no. 26. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1988, 38, 328-329.
Effective publication: YU (I.K.) and KAWAMURA (F.): Halomethanococcus doii gen. nov., sp. nov.: an obligately halophilic methanogenic bacterium from solar salt ponds. J. Gen. Appl. Microbiol., 1987, 33, 303-310.
Validation List no. 26 in IJSM Online - Effective publication Online
Note: Halomethanococcus Yu and Kawamura 1988 may be considered as a later heterotypic synonym of ¤ Methanohalophilus Paterek and Smith 1988. Based on its published phenotypic description, Halomethanococcus cannot be distinguished from ¤ Methanohalophilus. The type strain of ¤ Halomethanococcus doii Yu and Kawamura 1988 (the only species in that genus) has been lost, so it will never be possible to identify phenotypic traits to differenciate this species, nor will it be possible to demonstate that the species has significant phylogenetic differences from species of ¤ Methanohalophilus.

Halomethanococcus doii Yu and Kawamura 1988, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) 1Y-1 = ATCC 43619.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: not found.
Etymology: N.L. masc. gen. n. doii, of Doi, named for R. H. Doi, a scientist who has contributed to microbiology.
