Etymology: Gr. n. hals halos, salt; N.L. neut. n. microbium (from Gr. adj. mikros, small and Gr. n. bios, life), a microbe; N.L. neutr. n. Halomicrobium, small, salt-life form.

Etymology: N.L. gen. masc. n. katesii, of Kates, named in honour of Professor Morris Kates, for his contributions on halophilic micro-organisms.
