Etymology: Gr. n. hals halos, salt; L. fem. n. talea, a staff, rod; N.L. fem. n. Halotalea, rod-shaped cells living in saline conditions.

Etymology: N.L. n. alkali (from Arabic al qaliy), soda ash; L. adj. lentus, slow; N.L. n. alkalilenta, slow in alkaline conditions/alkalitolerant.
