Type species: ¤ Herbidospora cretacea Kudo et al. 1993.
Etymology: L. adj. herbidus, full of grass, grassy; Gr. n. spora, a seed and in biology a spore; N.L. fem. n. Herbidospora, organism forming spores like grass.

Etymology: L. n. osyris, a plant (probably the broom-like goose-foot or summer cypress), and also a botanical genus name (Osirys); N.L. gen. n. osyris, of Osyris, the plant genus from which this species was isolated.
