Etymology: Gr. adj. holos -ê -on, whole, entire, complete in all its parts; Gr. fem. n. spora, seed (in biology, a spore);N.L. fem. n. Holospora, whole spore.

Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) the type strain is carried in strain 562 of Paramecium biaurelia (= ATCC 30694.

Etymology: G. n. karuon, nut, kernel (in biology, nucleus); N.L. fem. adj. phila (from Gr. fem. adj. philê), friend, loving; N.L. fem. adj. caryophila, nucleus loving.

Holospora obtusa (ex Hafkine 1890) Gromov and Ossipov 1981, sp. nov., nom. rev.
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) the type is the original description and illustration of Hafkine (Ann. Inst. Pasteur Paris, 1890, 4, 148-162.). Clone M-115 of Paramecium caudatum containing Holospora obtusa in its macronuclei has been deposited in the culture collection of the Laboratory of Invertebrate Zoology, Biological Research Institute, Leningrad University.

Etymology: L. fem. adj. obtusa, obtuse, blunt.
