Type species: ¤ Hongiella mannitolivorans Yi and Chun 2004.
Etymology: N.L. dim. fem. n. Hongiella, named in honour of Soon-Woo Hong, a Korean microbiologist who devoted his life to the study of soil micro-organism.

Note: Nedashkovskaya et al. 2007 propose to transfer ¤ Hongiella mannitolivorans Yi and Chun 2004 (the type species of the genus Hongiella) to the genus ¤ Algoriphagus as ¤ Algoriphagus mannitolivorans (Yi and Chun 2004) Nedashkovskaya et al. 2007, comb. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Hongiella to ¤ Algoriphagus.
