Type species: ¤ Hydrocarboniphaga effusa Palleroni et al. 2004.
Etymology: N.L. neut. n. hydrocarbonum, hydrocarbon; Gr. v. phagein, to eat; N.L. fem. n. Hydrocarboniphaga, eater of hydrocarbons.

Etymology: N.L. fem. adj. daqingensis, pertaining to Daqing, where the type strain was isolated.

Etymology: L. fem. adj. effusa, wide-spread, extensive, diffuse, making reference to the spreading tendency of colonies growing on minimal agar medium.
