Etymology: L. n. India, India; N.L. masc. n. bacter, a rod; N.L. masc. n. Indibacter, a rod from India, referring to the isolation of the bacterial strain from India.

Indibacter alkaliphilus Anil Kumar et al. 2010, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) LW1 = CCUG 57479 = KCTC 22604.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: FM883672.
Etymology: N.L. n. alkali, soda ash; N.L. adj. philus -a -um (from Gr. adj. philos -ê -on), friend, loving; N.L. masc. adj. alkaliphilus, alkali-loving.

Note: The type species is not cited in the paper by Anil Kumar et al. 2010. However, when originally published the genus included only one species (Indibacter alkaliphilus) and that species must be the type (see Rule 20c).
