Etymology: N.L. n. xylanum, xylan, a plant polymer; N.L. adj. lyticus -a -um (from Gr. adj. lutikos -ê -on) able to loosen, able to dissolve; N.L. neut. adj. xylanilyticum, xylan-dissolving.
