Etymology: L. adj. luteus, yellow, orange; L. fem. n. virga, staff, rod; N.L. fem. n. Luteivirga, orange rod.

Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) PIII.02 = ATCC BAA-2393 = LMG 26723.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: JN699062.
Etymology: N.L. fem. n. sdotyamensis, of or belonging to Sdot Yam, named after Kibbutz Sdot Yam, the nearest village to the collection site.
