Etymology: N.L. n. acidum malonicum, malonic acid; L. fem. n. monas, a unit, monad; N.L. fem. n. Malonomonas, malonic-acid-utilizing monad.

Etymology: L. adj. ruber -bra -brum, red; L. fem. adj. rubra, red, referring to the red color of the cells.
