Marinicola Yoon et al. 2005, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Marinicola seohaensis Yoon et al. 2005.
Etymology: L. adj. marinus, of or belonging to the sea, marine; L. masc. suff. -cola, inhabitant; N.L. masc. n. Marinicola, inhabitant of the sea.
Valid publication: YOON (J.H.), KANG (S.J.), LEE (C.H.) and OH (T.K.): Marinicola seohaensis gen. nov., sp. nov., isolated from sea water of the Yellow Sea, Korea. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2005, 55, 859-863.

¤ Roseivirga Nedashkovskaya et al. 2005 emend. Nedashkovskaya et al. 2005.

Note: According to Nedashkovskaya et al.[1], the genus Marinicola Yoon et al. 2005 is a later heterotypic synonym of the genus ¤ Roseivirga Nedashkovskaya et al. 2005 emend. Nedashkovskaya et al. 2005 (see below the note for ¤ Marinicola seohaensis). According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Marinicola to ¤ Roseivirga. However, Nedashkovskaya et al. [1] do not make a formal proposal to reclassify Marinicola seohaensis (the type species of the genus Marinicola). The formal reclassification of Marinicola seohaensis in the genus ¤ Roseivirga Nedashkovskaya et al. 2005 was proposed by Lau et al. 2006 [2].

Marinicola seohaensis Yoon et al. 2005, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) SW-152 = JCM 12600 = KCTC 12312.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AY739663.
Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. seohaensis, of or pertaining to Seohae, the Korean name for the Yellow Sea in Korea, from where the organism was isolated.
Valid publication: YOON (J.H.), KANG (S.J.), LEE (C.H.) and OH (T.K.): Marinicola seohaensis gen. nov., sp. nov., isolated from sea water of the Yellow Sea, Korea. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2005, 55, 859-863.

Note: Nedashkovskaya et al. 2005 found that the level of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between Marinicola seohaensis SW-152 (the type strain of the type species of the genus Marinicola) and ¤ Roseivirga ehrenbergii KMM 6017 (the type strain of the type species of the genus ¤ Roseivirga) is 99.8%. On the basis of the phylogenetic relationship Nedashkovskaya et al. propose that the genus Marinicola be a later heterotypic synonym of the genus ¤ Roseivirga. According to these authors, this conclusion is supported by the results of genomic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic analyses, which revealed many common features between members of the genera Marinicola and ¤ Roseivirga. Nedashkovskaya et al. provide an emended description of the genus ¤ Roseivirga to include the phenotypic characters of Marinicola seohaensis. However, Nedashkovskaya et al. do not make a formal proposal to reclassify Marinicola seohaensis. The formal reclassification of Marinicola seohaensis in the genus ¤ Roseivirga Nedashkovskaya et al. 2005 was proposed by Lau et al. 2006 (see below) [2].
