Marinilabilia Nakagawa and Yamasato 1996, gen. nov. (Type genus of the family ¤ Marinilabiliaceae Ludwig et al. 2012).
Type species: ¤ Marinilabilia salmonicolor (Veldkamp 1961) Nakagawa and Yamasato 1996.
Etymology: L. adj. marinus, of or belonging to the sea, marine; L. adj. labilis, gliding; N.L. fem. n. Marinilabilia, marine gliding organisms.

Marinilabilia agarovorans (Reichenbach 1989) Nakagawa and Yamasato 1996, comb. nov.
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) ATCC 19043= LMG 8607 = LMG 13037.

Basonym: ¤ Cytophaga agarovorans (ex Veldkamp 1961) Reichenbach 1989.
Other synonym: "Cytophaga salmonicolor var. agarovorans" Veldkamp 1961.
Etymology: N.L. n. agarum, agar, algal polysaccharide; L. v. vorare, to devour, to digest; N.L. part. adj. agarovorans, agar-digesting.

¤ Marinilabilia salmonicolor (Veldkamp 1961) Nakagawa and Yamasato 1996 emend. Suzuki et al. 1999.

Note: Genetic aspects (gyrB sequences, DNA-DNA hybridization and 16S rDNA sequences) led to the conclusion that Marinilabilia agarovorans (Reichenbach 1989) Nakagawa and Yamasato 1996 and ¤ Marinilabilia salmonicolor (Veldkamp 1961) Nakagawa and Yamasato 1996 belong to a single species. Since the epithet salmonicolor has priority, Marinilabilia agarovorans is a later heterotypic synonym of Marinilabilia salmonicolor. However, the agar-degrading ability of the type strain (ATCC 19043= IFO (now NBRC) 14957) of Marinilabilia agarovorans is a prominent biochemical characteristic; therefore Suzuki et al. 1999 propose that strain ATCC 19043= IFO (now NBRC) 14957 should be renamed Marinilabilia salmonicolor biovar Agarovorans.
