Etymology: L. adj. marinus, of the sea; N.L. neut. n. microbium, microbe; N.L. neut. n. Marinimicrobium, microbe living in the sea.

Etymology: N.L. n. agarum, agar; N.L. adj. lyticus -a -um (from Gr. adj. lutikos -ê -on), able to loosen, able to dissolve; N.L. neut. adj. agarilyticum, agar-dissolving.
