Type species: ¤ Marinospirillum minutulum (Watanabe 1959) Satomi et al. 1998.
Etymology: L. adj. marinus, of the sea, marine; L. n. spira, a spiral; N.L. dim. neut. n. spirillum, a small spiral; N.L. neut. n. Marinospirillum, a small spiral from the sea.

Etymology: N.L. n. alkali (from Arabic al-qalyi, the ashes of saltwort), soda ash; Gr. adj. philos -ê -on, loving; N.L. neut. adj. alkaliphilum, loving alkaline conditions.

However, according to the Judicial Opinion 81, Marinospirillum alkaliphilum Zhang et al. 2002 is considered to be validly published, since deposit in a second culture collection in a different country has been documented.
