Etymology: Gr. adj. mesos, middle; N.L. adj. philus -a -um (from Gr. adj. philos -ê -on), friend, loving; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod, staff; N.L. masc. n., Mesophilobacter, mesophilic rod.
