Type species: ¤ Methanocalculus halotolerans Ollivier et al. 1998.
Etymology: N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; N.L. pref. methano-, pertaining to methane; L. masc. n. calculus, pebble, gravel; N.L. masc. n. Methanocalculus, methane (-producing) pebble-shaped organism.

Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. chunghsingensis, from Chung Hsing University, to honour the university where the research was performed.
