Methanocella Sakai et al. 2008, gen. nov. (Type genus of the order ¤ Methanocellales Sakai et al. 2008; type genus of the family ¤ Methanocellaceae Sakai et al. 2008).
Type species: ¤ Methanocella paludicola Sakai et al. 2008.
Etymology: N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; N.L. pref. methano-, pertaining to methane; L. fem. n. cella, a room, and in biology a cell; N.L. fem. n. Methanocella, a methane-producing cell.

Etymology: L. n. arvum, an arable field, cultivated land; L. n. oryza, rice; N.L. gen. n. arvoryzae, of a rice paddy field.

Methanocella conradii Lü and Lu 2012, sp. nov.
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) HZ254 = CGMCC 1.5162 = DSM 24694 = JCM 17849.

Etymology: N.L. masc. gen. n. conradii, of Conrad, named after Ralf Conrad, who has pioneered the studies on RC-I methanogens in environmental samples.

Etymology: L. n. palus -udis, swamp, muddy environment; L. suff. -cola (derived from L. n. incola), inhabitant, dweller; N.L. masc. n. paludicola, an inhabitant of muddy environments.
