Type species: ¤ Methanococcoides methylutens Sowers and Ferry 1985.
Etymology: N.L. masc. n. Methanococcus, a bacterial genus name; L. suff. -oides (from Gr. suff. -eides, from Gr. n. eidos, that which is seen, form, shape, figure), ressembling, similar; N.L. neut. n. Methanococcoides, organism similar to Methanococcus.
