Methanococcoides Sowers and Ferry 1985, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Methanococcoides methylutens Sowers and Ferry 1985.
Etymology: N.L. masc. n. Methanococcus, a bacterial genus name; L. suff. -oides (from Gr. suff. -eides, from Gr. n. eidos, that which is seen, form, shape, figure), ressembling, similar; N.L. neut. n. Methanococcoides, organism similar to Methanococcus.

Etymology: N.L. neut. adj. alaskense, pertaining to Alaska, referring to Skan Bay, Alaska, from where the type strain was isolated.

Etymology: N.L. gen. n. burtonii, of Burton; named after Harry R. Burton, a limnologist who discovered methane in Ace Lake.

Etymology: L. gen. n. vulcani, of Vulcanus, the Roman god of fire; relating to the place of isolation from Napoli Mud Volcano.
