Methanocorpusculum Zellner et al. 1988, gen. nov. (Type genus of the family ¤ Methanocorpusculaceae Zellner et al. 1989).
Type species: ¤ Methanocorpusculum parvum Zellner et al. 1988.
Etymology: N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; N.L. pref. methano-, pertaining to methane; L. neut. n. corpusculum, a little body, a particle; N.L. neut. n. Methanocorpusculum, a methane-producing particle.

Etymology: N.L. neut. gen. n. bavaricum, pertaining to Bavaria, to indicate the original habitat of the type strain of the species which was isolated from anaerobic sediment of a wastewater treatment pond at a sugar factory in Regensburg, Germany.

Etymology: M.L. gen. n. sinae, of China; N.L. neut. adj. sinense, pertaining to China, indicating the source of the type strain which was isolated from a pilot plant for treatment of distillery wastewater in Chengdu, China.
