Etymology: N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; N.L. pref. methano-, pertaining to methane; L. masc. n. follis, a cushion or pillow inflated with air, a bag; N.L. masc. n. Methanofollis, methane-producing bag.

Etymology: N.L. n. ethanol, ethanol; L. suff. -icus -a -um, suffix used with various meanings; N.L. masc. adj. ethanolicus, belonging to ethanol, referring to the substrate ethanol, which can be metabolized by the species.
