Type species: ¤ Methanohalobium evestigatum corrig. Zhilina and Zavarzin 1988.
Etymology: N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; N.L. pref. methano-, pertaining to methane; Gr. n. hals halos, salt; Gr. masc. n. bios, life; N.L. neut. n. Methanohalobium, methane-producing organism living in salt.
