Etymology: N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; N.L. pref. methano-, pertaining to methane; L. fem. n. linea, line; N.L. fem. n. Methanolinea, a methane-producing, line-shaped morphotype.

Etymology: Gr. adj. mesos, medium; N.L. fem. adj. phila (from Gr. fem. adj. philê), loving; N.L. fem. adj. mesophila, medium-temperature-loving, mesophilic.
