Methanosaeta Patel and Sprott 1990, gen. nov. (Type genus of the family ¤ Methanosaetaceae Boone et al. 2002). (Illegitimate name).
Type species: ¤ Methanosaeta concilii (Patel 1985) Patel and Sprott 1990.
Etymology: N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; N.L. pref. methano-, pertaining to methane; L. fem. n. saeta, bristle; N.L. fem. n. Methanosaeta, methane (-producing) bristle.

Note: According to the Judicial Commission, the name Methanosaeta is illegitimate and should be rejected as a source of confusion. It should be replaced with the genus name Methanothrix. The replacement name will be nom. nov. (sic) and all species in the genus Methanosaeta should be transferred to the genus Methanothrix.

Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) GP6 = ATCC 35969= DSM 3671 = JCM 10134 = NRC 2989 = OCM 69 (OGC 69).
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: S42679 (segment 1 of 3, 159 bp), S42680 (segment 2 of 3, 194 bp), S42681 (segment 3 of 3, 186 bp).
Basonym: ¤ Methanothrix concilii Patel 1985.
Etymology: L. gen. n. concilii, of a council, named after the National Research Council of Canada, in whose laboratories the type strain was isolated.

Methanosaeta harundinacea Ma et al. 2006, sp. nov. (Illegitimate name).
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) 8Ac = CGMCC 1.5026 = JCM 13211.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AY817738.
Etymology: L. fem. adj. harundinacea, like a reed, referring to the cell shape of a reed stem.

Note: Methanosaeta harundinacea Ma et al. 2006 is illegitimate, because the genus name is illegitimate. According to the Judicial Commission, all species in the genus Methanosaeta should be transferred to the genus Methanothrix. However, no formal decision was taken to propose a new combination.
