Etymology: N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; N.L. pref. methano-, pertaining to methane; L. neut. adj. salsum, salted, salty; N.L. neut. n. Methanosalsum, the salty methane (bacterium).
