Methanospirillum Ferry et al. 1974, genus. (Type genus of the family ¤ Methanospirillaceae Boone et al. 2002).
Type species: ¤ Methanospirillum hungatei corrig. Ferry et al. 1974 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; N.L. pref. methano-, pertaining to methane; L. fem. n. spira, a spire; N.L. neut. n. spirillum, a spiral; N.L. neut. n. Methanospirillum, methane (-producing) spiral.

Etymology: N.L. gen. masc. n. hungateii, of Hungate; named for R. E. Hungate who has made many contributions to the ecological study of methanogenic bacteria.

Etymology: N.L. gen. n. stamsii, of Stams, named after Alfons J. M. Stams, a Dutch microbiologist, for his great contribution to the understanding of syntrophic communities of bacteria and archaea.
