Type species: ¤ Methanospirillum hungatei corrig. Ferry et al. 1974 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; N.L. pref. methano-, pertaining to methane; L. fem. n. spira, a spire; N.L. neut. n. spirillum, a spiral; N.L. neut. n. Methanospirillum, methane (-producing) spiral.
