Methanothermobacter Wasserfallen et al. 2000, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus (Zeikus and Wolfe 1972) Wasserfallen et al. 2000, comb. nov.
Synonym: "Methanobacter" Boone et al. 1993.
Etymology: N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; N.L. pref. methano-, pertaining to methane; Gr. adj. thermos, hot; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod, staff; N.L. masc. n. Methanothermobacter, thermophilic methane rod.
Valid publication: WASSERFALLEN (A.), NÖLLING (J.), PFISTER (P.), REEVE (J.) and CONWAY de MACARIO (E.): Phylogenetic analysis of 18 thermophilic Methanobacterium isolates supports the proposals to create a new genus, Methanothermobacter gen. nov., and to reclassify several isolates in three species, Methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus comb. nov., Methanothermobacter wolfeii comb. nov. and Methanothermobacter marburgensis sp. nov. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2000, 50, 43-53.
Original article in IJSEM Online

Note 1: In 1993, Boone et al. provided molecular taxonomic evidence that the thermophilic species of ¤ Methanobacterium Kluyver and van Niel 1936 (Approved Lists 1980) should be moved into a separate genus, suggesting Methanobacter as the name. However, the genus name "Methanobacter" Boone et al. 1993 was not validly published.

Note 2: In the paper describing the new genus Methanothermobacter, Wasserfallen et al. [1] proposed ¤ Methanothermobacter marburgensis Wasserfallen et al. 2000, sp. nov., ¤ Methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus (Zeikus and Wolfe 1972) Wasserfallen et al. 2000, comb. nov., and ¤ Methanothermobacter wolfeii corrig. (Winter et al. 1985) Wasserfallen et al. 2000, comb. nov.
The authors [1] also proposed the following new combinations: "Methanothermobacter defluvii" (Kotelnikova et al. 1994) Wasserfallen et al. 2000 (basonym: ¤ Methanobacterium defluvii Kotelnikova et al. 1994), "Methanothermobacter thermoflexus" (Kotelnikova et al. 1994) Wasserfallen et al. 2000 (basonym: ¤ Methanobacterium thermoflexum Kotelnikova et al. 1994), and "Methanothermobacter thermophilus" (Laurinavichus et al. 1990) Wasserfallen et al. 2000 (basonym: ¤ Methanobacterium thermophilum Laurinavichus et al. 1990). However, these new combinations were not described according to the Rules of the Bacteriological Code (1990 Revision), and they were not cited in the Notification List published in the March 2000 issue of the IJSEM [2]. Later, "Methanothermobacter defluvii", "Methanothermobacter thermoflexus", and "Methanothermobacter thermophilus" were cited in the second edition of the Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology [3] and they were validly published in Validation List no. 85 [4].
