Type species: ¤ Methanothermococcus thermolithotrophicus (Huber et al. 1984) Whitman 2002.
Etymology: N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; N.L. pref. methano-, pertaining to methane; Gr. adj. thermos, hot; N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. masc. n. kokkos, grain, seed), coccus; N.L. masc. n. Methanothermococcus, a coccus producing methane at thermophilic growth temperatures.

Etymology: Gr. n. thermê, heat; Gr. n. lithos, stone; Gr. masc. adj. trophikos, nursing, tending; N.L. masc. adj. thermolithotrophicus, grows lithotrophically at elevated temperatures.
