Methanotorris Whitman 2002, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Methanotorris igneus (Burggraf et al. 1990) Whitman 2002.
Etymology: N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; N.L. pref. methano-, pertaining to methane; L. masc. n. torris, a brand, firebrand; N.L. masc. n. Methanotorris, the methane-producer at fiery temperatures.

Methanotorris formicicus Takai et al. 2004, sp. nov.
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) Mc-S-70 = ATCC BAA-687 = JCM 11930.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AB100884.
Etymology: N.L. neut. n. acidum formicicum, formic acid; L. masc. suffix -icus, suffix used with the sense of belonging to, pertaining to; N.L. masc. adj. formicicus, pertaining to formic acid.

Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) Kol 5 = DSM 5666 = JCM 11834.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: M59125, CP002737 (complete genome).
Basonym: ¤ Methanococcus igneus Burggraf et al. 1990.
Etymology: L. masc. adj. igneus, belonging to the fire, denoting its high growth temperature.

However, according to the Judicial Opinion 81, Methanotorris igneus (Burggraf et al. 1990) Whitman 2002 is to be considered to be validly published.
