Type species: ¤ Methylohalobius crimeensis Heyer et al. 2005.
Etymology: N.L. n. methylum (from French méthyle, back-formation from French méthylène, coined from Gr. n. methu, wine and Gr. n. hulê, wood), the methyl group; N.L. pref. methylo-, pertaining to the methyl radical; Gr. n. hals halos, salt; Gr. masc. n. bios, life; N.L. masc. n. Methylohalobius, salt-requiring, methyl-using bacterium.

Note: The etymology cited in the paper by Heyer et al. 2005 is the following: N.L. neut. n. methyl, methylis the methyl group; Gr. n. hals halos, salt; Gr. masc. n. bios life; N.L. masc. n. Methylohalobius salt-requiring, methyl-using bacterium. However, with such an etymology the correct name should be Methylihalobius.
