Methylophilus Jenkins et al. 1987, gen. nov. (Type genus of the order ¤ Methylophilales Garrity et al. 2006; type genus of the family ¤ Methylophilaceae Garrity et al. 2006).
Type species: ¤ Methylophilus methylotrophus Jenkins et al. 1987.
Etymology: N.L. n. methylum (from French méthyle, back-formation from French méthylène, coined from Gr. n. methu, wine and Gr. n. hulê, wood), the methyl radical; N.L. pref. methylo-, pertaining to the methyl radical; N.L. adj. philus -a -um (from Gr. adj. philos -ê -on), friend, loving; N.L. masc. n. Methylophilus, methyl radical loving.
