Methylothermus Tsubota et al. 2005, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Methylothermus thermalis Tsubota et al. 2005.
Etymology: N.L. n. methylum (from French méthyle, back-formation from French méthylène, coined from Gr. n. methu, wine and Gr. n. hulê, wood), the methyl group; N.L. pref. methylo-, pertaining to to the methyl radical; Gr. adj. thermos, hot; N.L. masc. n. Methylothermus, methyl-using thermotolerant organism.
Valid publication: TSUBOTA (J.), ESHINIMAEV (B.Ts.), KHMELENINA (V.N.) and TROTSENKO (Y.A.): Methylothermus thermalis gen. nov., sp. nov., a novel moderately thermophilic obligate methanotroph from a hot spring in Japan. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2005, 55, 1877-1884.

Notes:
1 Methylothermus Tsubota et al. 2005 is illegitimate because the type species is not validly published.
2 The etymology cited in the paper by Tsubota et al. 2005 is the following: N.L. n. methyl the methyl group; N.L. masc. subst. from Gr. adj. thermos hot; Methylothermus methyl-using thermotolerant organism. However, with such an etymology the correct name should be Methylithermus.
3 The gender of the genus name is not provided in the paper by Tsubota et al. 2005. However, according to rules of Latin and latinization, Methylothermus must be in the masculine gender.

Methylothermus subterraneus Hirayama et al. 2011, sp. nov.
Type strain: (see also StrainInfo.net) HTM55 = DSM 19750 = JCM 13664.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AB536747.
Etymology: L. masc. adj. subterraneus, under the earth, indicating the first isolation source.
Valid publication: HIRAYAMA (H.), SUZUKI (Y.), ABE (M.), MIYAZAKI (M.), MAKITA (H.), INAGAKI (F.), UEMATSU (K.) and TAKAI (K.): Methylothermus subterraneus sp. nov., a moderately thermophilic methanotroph isolated from a terrestrial subsurface hot aquifer. Note: Methylothermus subterraneus Hirayama et al. 2011 is illegitimate because the genus Methylothermus Tsubota et al. 2005 is illegitimate.

Note: The type strain of the type species of the genus Methylothermus, Methylothermus thermalis, is a patent strain. Boden and Oren (2017) made a Request for an Opinion to the Judicial Commission of the ICSP to consider the later-named Methylothermus subterraneus as the new type species of the genus Methylothermus based on Rule 20e(2).

Type strain: (see also StrainInfo.net) MYHT = IPOD FERM P-19714 = VKM B-2345.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AY829009.
Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. thermalis, pertaining to a hot spring.
Valid publication: TSUBOTA (J.), ESHINIMAEV (B.T.S.), KHMELENINA (V.N.) and TROTSENKO (Y.A.): Methylothermus thermalis gen. nov., sp. nov., a novel moderately thermophilic obligate methanotroph from a hot spring in Japan. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2005, 55, 1877-1884.

Note: IPOD is solely set up to deal with deposits on a confidential basis (i.e. patent deposits under the Budapest Treaty). Strain IPOD FERM P-19714 is probably a patent deposit, and Methylothermus thermalis Tsubota et al. 2005 is not validly published (i.e. the strain is not freely available without restriction, this does not comply with the requirements of the Bacteriological Code, which states that strains have to be deposited in two culture collections and be freely available from them.).

Note: The type strain of the type species of the genus Methylothermus, Methylothermus thermalis, is a patent strain.
