Type species: ¤ Moorella thermoacetica (Fontaine et al. 1942) Collins et al. 1994.
Etymology: N.L. fem. dim. n. Moorella, in honor of W.E.C. (Ed) Moore, an American bacteriologist, who worked with anaerobes.

Etymology: Gr. adj. glukeros, sweet; N.L. n. glycerinum, glycerin or glycerol; N.L. gen. n. glycerini, of glycerol, referring to utilization of glycerol as a substrate.

Etymology: N.L. gen. n. mulderi, of Mulder, named after Eppe G. Mulder, a Deutch microbiologist and head of the Laboratory of Microbiology at the Wageningen Agricultural University between 1956 and 1981.

Basonym: ¤ Clostridium thermautotrophicum corrig. Wiegel et al. 1982.
Etymology: Gr. adj. thermos, hot; Gr. pron. autos, self; Gr. n. trophos, a feeder; N.L. fem. adj. thermautotrophica, self-feeding in heat, indicating that the organism grows at elevated temperatures and uses CO2 as its principal carbon source for growth.
