Etymology: L. n. murus, a wall; N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. masc. n. kokkos, grain, seed), coccus; N.L. masc. n. Muricoccus, coccus from the wall.

Note: Sánchez-Porro et al. 2009 propose to transfer Muricoccus roseus Kämpfer et al. 2003 (the type species of the genus Muricoccus) to the genus ¤ Roseomonas as ¤ Roseomonas rosea (Kämpfer et al. 2003) Sánchez-Porro et al. 2009, comb. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Muricoccus to ¤ Roseomonas.
