Type genus: ¤ Myxococcus Thaxter 1892 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: N.L. masc. n. Myxococcus, type genus of the family; suff. -aceae, ending to denote a family; N.L. fem. pl. n. Myxococcaceae, the Myxococcus family.
